Testing a LaTeX plugin for the ol' blog!

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

So I’m doing a little revision because it turns out, hey, I suck at Maths, and I stumble on this one; for the record, I am growing quite a hatred for roots. It might seem simple, and I did figure it out in the end, I think (!), but it’d be interesting to see a decent explanation for it rather that, this equals this so this is that and yeah :)

h^{2}=\frac{3}{4}

so

h=\sqrt{\frac{3}{4}}=\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}

I absolutely, totally get that h=\sqrt{\frac{3}{4}} but why is that simplified further to \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}?! Without going downstairs to look at the exercise again, I think the purpose was to simplify the root so it could be calculated by hand. I figure, however, that if you don’t know the square root of 0.75, then you won’t know the square root of three divided by two either?! 1

At least the LaTeX looks pretty…

  1. it’s 0.866025403784439, btw

EXAM!

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

I’ve got just under two and a half hours until the start of my first Open University exam I’ve ever had to take. The course is S282 which I started what seems like a million years a go.

It’s been much, much harder than I imagined and to be honest, I’ll be glad when it’s all over. I think that taking a level two course was a leap too far and I’ll be withdrawing into the shining happy world of some level one math for my next course in January :)

I’ll update this post when I get back home this evening…

[Update]
Well, I’m home.

Didn’t go too badly, obviously can’t really discuss the questions but I did manage to think of stuff to write about in answer to the questions for nearly three hours so hopefully some of it was right!

And thank god for the “Useful data, equations and expressions” page at the front of the question booklet :D
